Women's Lax Opens Season with Dominating Win
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.- CUA's women's lacrosse team hit the ground running in their first contest of the year, defeating St. Mary's College (Md.) by a score of 17-10 Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals out-shot the Seahawks 43-20 in the contest, and dominated their opponent in nearly every statistical category.
Leading the charge for the Cards was senior Kate Robinson, who posted five goals, two assists, two groundballs, and one caused turnover. Following Robinson was Caroline Taltavull, recording four goals and two groundballs in the victory. Katie Buonpastore and Lindsay Davenport tallied two goals each, and also combined for four assists.
Rounding out the scoring for CUA were Laura Haring, Mary Swarthout, Kelly Ryan, and Katie Miller, contributing one goal apiece. Haring also chipped in two assists, while Ryan scooped up three groundballs in the win. Goaltender Melissa Brashear was credited with her first win of the year, as she stopped 8 shots in goal on the night.
The Cards opened up the scoring with back to back goals in the first two minutes of play. St. Mary's then responded with three unanswered goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead with nine minutes left in the first period. Robinson then took matters into her own hands, scoring two goals that sparked a 4-1 run, giving CUA a 6-4 lead at the half.
The squad continued to dominate in the second stanza. After both teams traded goals in the first two minutes, a goal by Taltavull would give the Cards their final lead of the contest. CUA led by as much as 8 before the final buzzer sounded, and the squad ran away with a convincing 17-10 victory.
