Cards Open Landmark Play with 15-4 Win Over Drew
WASHINGTON- The #16 Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team earned decisive 15-4 victory over conference rival Drew University Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium. CUA's record now improves to 5-5 on the year, 1-0 in Landmark play.
The Cardinals may have given up the first goal of the game, but the short-lived 1-0 advantage would be Drew's only lead of the night. Catholic's Mary Swarthout produced a hat trick in a five minute span to give the home team a 3-1 edge. CUA continued their offensive romp with a 7-1 run to end the half, including two more from Swarthout.
The second stanza was much of the same, as the Cards continued to find success in their balanced offensive attack. Kate Narzikul opened up the scoring in period two by converting a pass from junior Kelly Ryan. Ryan then netted two unassisted goals of her own, followed by a pair from sophomore Mallory Vogel that sealed the deal for CUA.
Swarthout finished with five of the team's 15 goals, while Vogel and Ryan each chipped in two. Laura Haring, Meg Brady, Christina Rogers, Caroline Taltavull, Katie Miller, and Narzikul rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
The Cards also found success on the defensive end, finishing with 11 caused turnovers in the win. Haring, Becky Borrell, and Meg Murray each managed two CTs each. In goal, Melissa Brashear stopped 9 shots and allowed only four goals on the night.
CUA will return to action on April 14, as they host Goucher College with a 4 p.m., start time.
