Four Cardinals Earn All-Region Honors
WASHINGTON- Four members of the CUA women’s lacrosse team have been named to the All-Chesapeake Region team, announced the IWLCA Thursday. Earning First Team accolades were defender Becky Borrell and midfielder Mary Swarthout. Teammates Meg Brady and Melissa Brashear were named to the Second Team.
Becky Borrell was one of the toughest defenders on the Cardinal squad this season. The junior played and started in all 20 games for CUA, and led the team in caused turnovers (32). She scooped up 49 ground balls and added 11 draw controls, one goal, and two assists in her junior campaign. Borrell was also named to the First Team All-Landmark Conference for her efforts this year.
Sophomore Mary Swarthout was one of the most tenacious offensive threats for the Cards this year. In total, Swarthout accumulated 44 goals and 24 assists for a team-high 68 points. She led the team in draw controls (59) and ground balls (50), while forcing 30 caused turnovers.The midfielder was also named the Landmark Player of the Year to go along with her First Team All-Conference honors.
Meg Brady was a welcomed addition to the CUA squad this season. In her first year with the Cardinals, Brady amassed 45 goals and 10 assists for 55 points. She also added 22 ground balls, 17 draw controls, and 16 caused turnovers. Along with being named to the Second Team All-Chesapeake Region, Brady also earned First Team All-Conference honors.
Rounding out the All-Region selections was senior goalie Melissa Brashear. Brashear helped lead the Cardinals to become one of the toughest defensive teams in Division III. In her final season, she amassed 146 saves with a save percentage of .477. She was also named to the Second Team All-Conference.
