Cardinals Fly Past Goucher in Landmark Semi-Final Action
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women’s lacrosse team earned a staggering 22-7 victory over Goucher College Wednesday afternoon in round one of the Landmark Conference tournament. With the win, CUA improves to 11-6 overall and will host the championship game on Saturday, May 8.
After Goucher netted the first goal of the game, CUA pulled together to unleash an offensive fury that left the Gophers stunned. The Cardinals outscored the visitors 13-4 in the first stanza, showing both their offensive prowess and defensive tenacity.
The second half was much like the first. Catholic’s Laura Haring opened the period with a hat trick in the first three minutes of play. The squad continued their offensive romp while holding the Gophers to just three goals. CUA’s Lindsay Davenport notched one final goal with less than two minutes to play that put an exclamation point on the already impressive lead, and as the Cardinals pulled away with a decisive 22-7 victory.
Haring had a stellar performance in the win, netting six goals for the Red and Black. Senior Kate Narzikul found the back of the net four times, while Caroline Taltavull, Mary Swarthout, and Lindsay Davenport added three scores apiece. Lauren Berntstein and Mallory Vogel rounded out the scoring by chipping in two goals and one goals, respectively. Katie Buonpastore’s also dished out an impressive six assists in the win.
Becky Borrell was the backbone of CUA’s defensive efforts, tallying five caused turnovers and six groundballs. Meg Paul also had a strong night with six groundballs, while Taltavull added seven draw controls. Goaltender Melissa Brashear and Gab Sena combined for five saves in the net.
CUA will now look to capture its third consecutive Landmark Conference title, as they host Drew University at Cardinal Stadium this Saturday for the championship game.
