Three Cardinals honored after leading CUA to league title
WASHINGTON – The Landmark Conference honored two Cardinals on Tuesday and Synapse Sports rewarded one for her play last week. Katie Buonpastore and Kate Robinson were named the conference's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while Mary Swarthout was named to Synapse's Division III honor roll. This marks the fourth time this season that CUA has swept the conference weekly awards.
Buonpastore was CUA's leading scorer last week, totaling 11 points on nine assists and two goals in two games. She also picked up four ground balls, won a draw control and caused two turnovers.
In the Cardinals conference tournament semifinal win over Goucher on May 4 Buonpastore assisted on five of CUA's 19 goals and also picked up a pair of GBs. Three days later vs. Drew in the championship game, Buonpastore assisted on four goals, scored twice, caused two turnovers, scooped up two ground balls and won a draw control. Her goal with one second remaining in the first half tied the game at six.
Robinson had a terrific all-around week for CUA with five caused turnovers, eight draw controls, five goals, four assists and a ground ball.
She began her week with four caused turnovers, five draws, four goals, two assists and a ground ball in the win over Goucher. Robinson was a disruptive force all game long on Goucher clear attempts, as she intercepted several passes while the Gophers were attempting to clear. Against Drew, Robinson caused one turnover, won three draw controls, scored once and handed out two assists. One of her assists went to Buonpastore in the closing seconds of the first half as CUA tied the score.
Swarthout continued her strong play for CUA with five goals and four assists in the two games. She scored three times, won five draw controls and caused one turnover vs. Drew and earlier in the week, scored four times, dished out an assist, picked up five GBs and caused a pair of turnovers against Goucher.
CUA opens NCAA Tournament play on Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals play host to Mary Washington inside Cardinal Stadium. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m. CUA has won at least one game in the tournament in each of the last three seasons.
