Cardinals sweep weekly Landmark Conference awards

WASHINGTON – After picking up two more wins last week, the CUA women's lacrosse team was rewarded on Monday with Mary Swarthout and Kate Robinson earning Landmark Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week accolades, respectively.  This marks the fourth time this season a CUA player has been honored by the conference.

Swarthout had a huge week for CUA totaling 11 goals, including one game-winner, six assists, 10 ground balls, eight draw controls and three caused turnovers.  In the Cardinals victory over No. 17 Mary Washington on March 28 she scored five goals, including the game-winner and handed out a pair of assists.  She also picked up five GBs, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Three days later Swarthout was back at it, this time netting six goals to go along with three assists, two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover in the Cardinals back-and-forth game vs. No. 12 Middlebury.  The junior from Rockville, Md. then closed her week out with an assist, three ground balls and five draw controls in CUA's 10-9 conference win at Drew on Saturday, April 2.

With Swarthout taking care of the offense for CUA Robinson did her best work on the defensive end.  The senior scooped up five ground balls, won eight draw controls and caused seven turnovers in the Cardinals three games, while also scoring eight goals and handing out four assists.

Robinson's week began with five draw controls, four caused turnovers, a goal and an assist in the win over Mary Washington.  Against Middlebury Robinson scored three times, handed out two assists and also won two draw controls.

Robinson finished her week off with four goals and three caused turnovers against Drew.  She sealed the victory for CUA with a huge caused turnover with only 15 seconds remaining.  Swarthout then scooped up the ensuing ground ball and moments later the Cardinals were victorious.

Swarthout and Robinson are CUA's top two scorers this season, with 40 and 33 points, respectively.  Swarthout has scored 21 goals and Robinson 19 with Swarthout also leading the team in assists with 19.  Robinson is the team leader in caused turnovers with 14 and Swarthout paces the Cardinals in ground balls with 20.

No. 11 CUA and its award winners will play twice this week, beginning on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest at Haverford.  On Saturday the Cardinals will travel to take on conference foe Goucher.  The opening draw is set for noon.
