Four Cardinals named All-Region, including three on the 1st Team

WASHINGTON – Four Cardinals were named to the 2011 IWLCA All-Chesapeake Region Team on Thursday, including First Team selections Becky Borrell, Kate Robinson and Mary SwarthoutKatie Buonpastore earned a spot on the Second Team.  The three first team selections are CUA's most since 2009.

Swarthout was nearly unstoppable for the Cardinals all season long.  She led the team in goals (65), points (92), ground balls (52) and draw controls (57), while ranking second in caused turnovers (25) and third in assists (27).  The Maryland native led the Landmark Conference in points and game-winning goals (4).

A three-time Landmark Conference Player of the Week, Swarthout received First Team All-Conference recognition and was named the Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  She scored at least three goals 13 times.  This is Swarthout's third straight selection to the All-Region Team.

A three-time All-Landmark Conference selection, including two on the first team, Borrell has established herself as one of the top defenders in all of America.  A two-time member of the All-Region Team, Borrell finished the 2011 season with 31 ground balls, 23 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls, as well as two assists.  She caused four turnovers in three games, including the Cardinals second round NCAA Tournament contest vs. TCNJ.

Borrell concluded her CUA career with 82 games played, including 66 starts, 143 ground balls, 93 caused turnovers, 14 goals and 7 assists.

Robinson will go down as the best lacrosse player CUA has ever seen after earning her fourth straight All-Region selection.  A two-time All-American, four-time All-Conference selection and two-time Landmark Conference Player of the Year, Robinson scored 46 goals this season and handed out 35 assists.  She also won 49 draw controls, picked up 27 ground balls and caused 26 turnovers.

Robinson finished her CUA career owning the school record for goals (268), points (383), draw controls (252) and caused turnovers (114).

A four-time All-Conference honoree, Buonpastore earns her first career selection to the All-Region Team.  She was named conference Player of the Week on two occasions this year and wound up with 32 goals, a team-leading 38 assists, 24 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers.

Buonpastore scored a 2011-best six goals in an overtime win vs. Rowan and for her career she appeared in 82 games with 66 starts, and scored 93 goals, handed out 130 assists and totaled 104 ground balls.

All three CUA seniors, Borrell, Robinson and Buonpastore, have been selected for this year's IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star Game, which will take place on June 11 in Downingtown, Pa.  The three selections are the most in school history.
