Cardinals sweep weekly awards for third time in 2011
WASHINGTON – After helping lead CUA to a pair of wins last week, including a 17-8 victory over Scranton to complete an unbeaten regular season within the Landmark Conference, Katie Buonpastore and Mary Swarthout were named the conference's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Monday. This marks the third time this season that CUA has swept the weekly awards.
Buonpastore had a huge week offensively for the Cardinals, scoring seven goals and handing out seven assists in the two wins. She also picked up four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
The Lansdale, Pa. native began her week with a team-high six goals in CUA's 18-14 overtime win over Rowan on April 27. Two of her goals came in the extra session when the Cardinals pulled away from the Profs. Buonpastore also handed out a pair of assists in the win.
In Saturday's win over Scranton Buonpastore found the back of net once and totaled a team-high five assists. For the season Buonpastore has scored 26 goals and handed out 26 assists, to go along with 19 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers and three draw controls.
While Buonpastore handled the offense for CUA, Swarthout took care of the defense, with a team-best seven caused turnovers, in addition to nine draw controls and eight ground balls. A native of Rockville, Md., Swarthout also scored nine goals, including a pair of game-winners and handed out an assist.
Against Rowan Swarthout caused three turnovers, won eight draw controls and scooped up three ground balls, while also scoring four goals, including the game-winner in OT.
On Saturday, Swarthout caused four turnovers, picked up five ground balls and won a draw control, while also contributing five goals and an assist.
On the season Swarthout leads the Cardinals in scoring with 50 goals and 24 assists. She has also won 45 draw controls, scooped up 41 GBs and caused 22 turnovers. Four of her goals have been game-winners.
CUA also swept the conference weekly awards on April 4 and 11.
On Wednesday CUA begins its quest for a fourth straight Landmark Conference championship when the top-seeded Cardinals play host to No. 4 Goucher inside Cardinal Stadium. The opening draw is slated for 4 p.m.
