Cardinals moving on after downing Mary Washington 18-10
WASHINGTON – Behind six goals from Mary Swarthout and seven assists by Kate Robinson CUA downed Mary Washington 18-10 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals led 10-4 at halftime and received goals from eight different players as they win an NCAA Tournament game for the fourth consecutive season.
Less than eight minutes into the game CUA was in front 4-0 with Swarthout, Lindsay Davenport, Mallory Vogel and Meghan Brady each scoring goals.
Catherine Kennedy put the Eagles on the board with a goal with 17:14 remaining in the opening half, but back-to-back scores by Robinson and Swarthout gave CUA a 6-1 advantage with 13:51 to play before halftime.
Keller Torrey scored Mary Washington's second goal with 12:41 on the clock, but goals by Davenport, Robinson, and Buonpastore put the Cardinals lead at seven with under ten to play in the half.
Two straight scores by the Eagles' Erin Murphy cut CUA's lead to five, but Buonpastore fed Mary Robinson for another Cardinals score and they took a 10-4 lead into halftime.
Goals by Buonpastore and Brady in the opening 6:30 of the second half extended CUA's lead to eight, before UMW came back with two straight to make it 12-6.
Swarthout's 60th goal of the season came with 17:44 to play and put the Cardinals on top by seven, but again the Eagles scored two straight to pull within 13-8.
Swarthout and Buonpastore then went back-to-back to make it a 15-8 game, and a goal by Gretchen Wade and two more from Swarthout completed the scoring for CUA.
CUA out shot the Eagles 38-26 on the day and picked up 22 ground balls to Mary Washington's 17. CUA won 16 draw controls and forced the Eagles into 17 turnovers, while on clear attempts the Cardinals were 15 of 18.
Swarthout and the Robinson sisters, Kate and Mary, led CUA with three draw controls each, while Mary Robinson's four ground balls were a team-high. Buonpastore, Caroline Scalamandre and Kate Robinson all caused two turnovers and Gabby Sena stopped 11 shots in goal.
Kathryn Stiltz sent back 13 shots for the visitors with Murphy scoring a team-high three goals. Kennedy led the Eagles with four ground balls and Kathleen Mastopaolo caused two turnovers.
CUA now moves on to take on the nation's No. 1 ranked team, The College of New Jersey. The game will take place on Saturday, May 14 on the campus of Franklin & Marshall, in Lancaster, Pa., with start time slated for 2:30 p.m.
