CUA to host Mary Washington in NCAA Tournament on Wed.
WASHINGTON – CUA will host Mary Washington in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 11 inside Cardinal Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. The Cardinals captured their fourth consecutive Landmark Conference championship this past weekend and will be hosting an NCAA Tournament game for the third consecutive year.
Ranked eighth in the country, CUA is 14-3 this season, having won its last six games. The Cardinals completed their third unbeaten Landmark Conference regular season this year and downed Goucher and Drew in the Landmark Conference Tournament to win the championship.
CUA is 5-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, having advanced to the regional finals in 2008 and 2009. Last year the Cardinals defeated Christopher Newport at home before bowing out to Salisbury.
CUA and Mary Washington met earlier this year when the Cardinals earned a 12-8 win over the then-No. 17 Eagles on the road on March 28. Mary Swarthout scored five goals and Mary Robinson four for CUA, who used a 7-3 second half to break a 5-5 halftime tie and earn the win.
The Eagles enter the tournament with a 13-7 record, including a 6-2 mark within the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). Mary Washington advanced to the CAC championship before falling to Salisbury 18-6 and this will be the Eagles fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last six years.
