Cardinals post third straight shutout, down EMU 3-0

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Cardinals received an early goal
from Kate Masson and rode it to a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on
Thursday evening. Courtney Orgill and Maggie McCarthy also
scored for CUA, which has now won three straight and sits at 6-4
overall.
CUA controlled the action right from the start, taking the first
five shots of the match, and seven of the first eight.
Masson’s first shot came at the 16:28 mark and was a long
chip that went over EMU’s keeper’s head and found the
back of the net for a 1-0 CUA lead.
Less than 30 seconds later Masson looked for her second goal of
the night, but her header was saved by Jenni Beck.
Later in the half, Devon Flanagan’s shot at the 20:31 mark
was blocked, as was Courtney Orgill’s attempt less than a
minute later.
The Cardinals final attempt of the half came from Ellen Jansen
just before time expired, but it sailed wide and the teams headed
to halftime.
Early in the second, Orgill gave CUA a 2-0 lead when she scored
her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Only five minutes later McCarthy scored on a shot from just inside
the 18 and the Cardinals were comfortably in front by three.
From there CUA’s defense took over, limiting the Royals to
only six shots for the remainder of the match.
The Cardinals have now gone three straight matches without
allowing a goal. The last team to score against CUA was
Stevenson in the 81st minute of their match on September 21.
CUA finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots on Thursday and a 6-0
lead in corner kicks. Christina Cassidy made one save in goal
for the victorious Cardinals, while Beck sent back seven shots.
CUA is back in action on Saturday when the Cardinals close out
their road trip at Rutgers-Camden. Match time is slated for
12:30 p.m.
