CUA offense explodes in 6-0 shutout of Hood

WASHINGTON – CUA had its way with Hood on Tuesday afternoon, downing the Blazers 6-0 at CUA Soccer Field.  The Cardinals led 1-0 at halftime and then poured it on in the second, scoring five goals in a span of 34 minutes to notch their tenth win of the season.

Lauren Cadott got the scoring started for CUA only eight minutes into the match when she headed in a terrific corner kick from Mary McGann to put the Cardinals in front 1-0.

CUA continued to stay on the attack and had a number of scoring chances for the remainder of the half, but the Cardinals were unable to add to their lead and took the 1-0 advantage into halftime. 

CUA outshot the Blazers 16-1 and had a 5-0 advantage in corners during the first 45 minutes.

Only 37 seconds into the second, Courtney Orgill looked to add to the Cardinals lead, but Hood keeper Kirsten Cacciola stopped the shot.

Seven minutes later Orgill would not be denied, beating Cacciola with a shot off another assist by McGann to make it 2-0.  The goal was Orgill’s team-leading tenth of the season.

Just 15 seconds later, Kate Masson made it a 3-0 game when Caitlin Brett fed her for another CUA score.

At the 62:12 mark, Orgill netted her second goal of the match to up the lead to 4-0.  Brett notched her second assist of the afternoon as the Cardinals began to pull away.

The shots continued to come for CUA with Kiersten Gault trying her luck at the 69-minute mark, but Cacciola stopped the shot.

One minute later Cadott looked for her second goal of the match, but Cacciola was up to the challenge and again came up with the stop.

With less than 10 to play CUA refused to stop attacking, receiving a shot from Regina Zolbrod at the 82:35 mark that went wide.  Zolbrod just recently returned to action for the Cardinals after missing nearly two months with an injury.

At the 84:33 mark Brett got into the scoring act for CUA when classmate Maggie McCarthy fed her for the Cardinals fifth goal of the day.

Two minutes later Brett returned the favor, feeding McCarthy for a score to put the final margin at six.

Brett had a terrific day for CUA, finishing with three assists and a goal, while Orgill scored a team-high two goals.

CUA finished the match with a dominating 40-5 advantage in shots and the Cardinals were awarded all eight corner kicks.

Cacciola finished with 19 saves for the visitors, while Christina Cassidy stopped two shots for CUA before giving way to Gabby Sena, who sent back one shot.

CUA closes out its regular season on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome Drew to town on Senior Day.  Match time is slated for 2:30 p.m.
