MADISON, N.J. – CUA dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Drew on Saturday in the regular season finale. The Cardinals hit the post twice in the match, but were unable to get on the scoreboard. Despite the setback, CUA did clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament, which begins next week.
CUA took one more shot than the Rangers, finishing with an 11-10 advantage, while both teams were awarded four corner kicks.
Freshman Lexi Halperin stopped three shots in goal for the Cardinals, while Kim Jaikissoon sent back two shots for Drew.
Drew's Courtney Carnevale had a chance early in the match, but her header was saved by Halperin.
CUA got off back-to-back shots near the 25-minute mark, but both were high.
Emma Campbell scored the only goal of the afternoon in the 28th minute when she beat Halperin to make it 1-0. Katie O'Keefe assisted on the goal.
Late in the opening half, Kelly Henderson looked to tie things up for CUA, but her attempt hit off the post.
A shot by Campbell in the 48th minute was stopped by Halperin, as was Mel Santos' in the 58th minute, as the Cardinals remained down by just one.
A shot by Regina Zolbrod in the 70th minute for CUA was stopped by Jaikissoon, and Zolbrod's attempt just seconds later went high.
Late in the match, Zolbrod had another try, but this one hit off the post, and wound up being CUA's final attempt of the afternoon.
CUA will now head to Scranton for the Landmark Conference semifinals in a rematch of last year's championship match. The Cardinals are the No. 4 seed and the Royals are No. 1, and they will meet on Wednesday, October 31.
The two teams met just a week ago in Washington, and tied 0-0 in double overtime.
