Cardinals upended by Frostburg State in season opener
WASHINGTON – CUA fell to Frostburg State 4-0 on Saturday
in the season opener for both teams. The Bobcats scored twice
in the first half and added two more in the second, led by Adria
Graham’s three scores.
Graham put the visitors on top 12:43 into the match with her first
goal of the day.
CUA quickly looked for the equalizer with shots by Courtney Orgill
and Kate Masson, but the first attempt was saved and the second
sailed wide.
Dorie Gedridge gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with a little over 20
minutes to play in the half when she booted in a rebound off a
saved shot.
Trailing by two, CUA continued to look for chances on the
offensive end. Kayle Greaves got off a shot with 14 minutes
on the clock, but it went wide, and three minutes later, freshman
Alexa Tsaganos’ shot was high.
With a little over three minutes to play, Tsaganos unleashed a
shot from in front of the net that hit the crossbar. Had she
connected, CUA would have been down just one with a great deal of
momentum on its side heading into the half.
Orgill took three shots in the early going of the second, but none
connected, and soon after, Graham took a feed from Stephanie
Fazenbaker and scored goal number-two to make it 3-0.
A shot by Greaves at the 67:14 mark was saved and again Graham
responded, knocking in her third goal of the afternoon with 19
minutes remaining.
CUA never let up, totaling four shots down the stretch, but the
Cardinals were unable to get on the board.
The Bobcats finished with a 22-14 lead in shots, while CUA had a
5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Laxi Halperin sent back 10 shots in her collegiate debut
for CUA, while FSU starting goal keeper Katie Smith stopped seven
shots in 84 minutes of work.
CUA heads to Shenandoah for its next match, which will take place
on Tuesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m.
