Cardinals down Rowan 2-1 for first win of 2012
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – CUA picked up its first win of 2012 on Sunday with an impressive 2-1 win over Rowan on the campus of Mary Washington. The Cardinals controlled the action for most of the day and received goals from Mary McGann and Kate Masson.
CUA came out aggressive from the start, and that resulted in early opportunities. Jenna Carlen's shot two minutes in was saved by Maria Dorris and Masson's attempt four minutes later hit off the crossbar.
With 17:28 gone, McGann took a feed from Caitlin Conroy and put CUA on top 1-0.
Soon after the Cardinals' goal, Rowan's Morgan Muracco looked for the equalizer, but Lexi Halperin was there for the save to keep CUA on top.
Near the 41-minute mark, Maddy Thompson got off a shot for CUA that hit the crossbar.
That wound up being the final shot of the opening half as the Cardinals took their 1-0 lead into the break.
Back-to-back shots by Lauren Cadott during the early part of the second half were both saved, as was Courtney Orgill's attempt at the 56:31 mark.
Two minutes later, Halperin turned back Muracco. Muracco then put the ball into play with a corner kick and followed it up by scoring the game-tying goal.
Unfazed, Masson came right back for CUA and netted the eventual game-winner at the 60:54 mark.
Rowan got off two shots near the 75-minute mark that were off the mark, and Halperin stopped Becca Labinger's attempt at the 82:45 mark to preserve the Cardinals' first win of the season.
CUA finished the contest with a 12-10 advantage in shots and Rowan was awarded four of the five corner kicks. Dorris sent back seven shots for the Profs, and Halperin finished with six saves.
CUA remains on the road for its next match, traveling to Gettysburg on Wednesday afternoon. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
