2012 season gets underway on Saturday for CUA
WASHINGTON – The CUA women's soccer team will open its 2012 season this weekend with a veteran squad that includes 11 seniors. The Cardinals won 12 matches a season ago and advanced to their third conference championship in the last four years.
CUA reported to campus for preseason camp nearly two weeks ago. After an intense stretch of training, the Cardinals are ready to get things started.
"We're happy," Head Coach JP Sousa said in reference to preseason training. "We had 30 girls come into camp and everyone was ready, so we really enjoyed the first week working together, meshing the new players with the old players."
He continued, "We have a great group of seniors. We have 11 seniors on our squad who have seen success and have seen heartbreak, so they want to get back out there. We're really looking for all of them to step up."
One of those 11 seniors is Lauren Cadott. She offered her thoughts on how camp went this year. "Preseason as always is a hectic week. But it's actually a good week because you get adjusted to being at school and you get adjusted to a new team."
She went on to say, "I think the freshmen adjusted quite well. Over the summer we kept them in the loop with everything. We talked almost everyday or at least once a week and they got to know who we were as a team, and then coming in, it felt as though they were a part of this team for the whole summer."
"It's really crazy being a senior," explained Mary McGann. "Everything is the last. Last preseason, last two-a-days. I just want to make the most of it. All of the seniors want to have a great year."
CUA opens its season on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals welcome Frostburg State to town for a 3 p.m. showdown.
Sousa, Cadott and McGann share more of their thoughts in the video below.
