WASHINGTON – Catholic University freshman Lindsay Aleman came off the bench and accumulated two goals in her debut as a collegiate student-athlete and the program's season-opening 4-0 win over Frostburg State University on Friday, Aug 30 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Kate Masson (Merrimacak, N.H. / Merrimack) put Catholic on the board 12 minutes into the first half and the Lady Cardinals never looked back. The senior took a give and go pass into the box where she finished past Katie Smith (Reistertown, Md. / Maryvale Prep) for her first goal of the season. Aleman scored her first goal with just under three minutes to play in the first half to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The mighty red and black kept the momentum going right out of the locker room, as Aleman finished a pass from junior Kaylre Greaves (Ocean, N.J. / Ocean Township) through the Frostburg defense at the 48:38 mark. Aleman was also on the giving side of the offense, as she assisted on Jennifer Delasco's (Lenox, Mass. / Lenox Memorial) goal to round out the scoring for the Cardinals. All four Catholic goals were assisted, as the Cardinals dominated the Bobcats with their time of possession.
Lexi Halpern (River Vale, N.J. / Pasack Valley) registered six saves en route to her first shutout of the season, holding Frostburg St. scoreless.
"They played really well, the defense knew that Frostburg's Adria Graham was an All-American and they were up for the challenge," said CUA Head Women's Soccer Coach J.P. Sousa.
The back line limited the 2012 CAC Player of the Year Graham (Grantsville, Md. / Northern Garrett) to just one shot for the game.
"Tonight was very satisfying; satisfying in the respect that we have lot of young student-athletes and we were a little unsure of what we were going to get," said Sousa. "As the game went on, one goal led to a second goal and the confidence got better as the game continued."
The Cardinals held the advantage in both shots (11-10) as well as corner kicks (4-1). Catholic returns to action next Wednesday, Sept. 4 when they travel to Hood College for another non-conference game slated to kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
