WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's soccer team used three second half goals to beat Whittier College 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 15 in Washington, D.C., at the CUA Soccer Field.
The first half was even, as the teams headed into intermission tied 0-0.
Kate Masson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) got the Cardinals scoring started first on an unassisted goal, as she collected a short clear from the Whittier goalie then sailed a shot just over her head to put her team up 1-0 less than five minutes into the second half.
Catholic kept pressuring the Poet's backline as Kirsten Wosleger (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) fired a shot at Alexi Cruz, who made the save but gave up a rebound. Jennifer Delasco (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) was lurking in the box and able to put away the loose ball for her second goal of the season at the 77:28 mark.
Kaylre Greaves (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) finished up the scoring for the Cardinals as Alyssa Fiore (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) led a 2-on-1 attack into Poet territory. In the 83rd minute, Fiore was able to draw Cruz out of position and find Greaves just inside the 18 who finished on an open net for the third and final goal of the game.
"We wanted to come out with a little more passion" said CUA women's soccer coach J.P. Sousa. "They saw opportunities and pounced on them. We needed to play a bit quicker in the midfield and also keep the ball wide so we could stretch out their defense and let things open up." The Poets had a 6-to-3 lead in shots for the first half, but the Cardinals' halftime adjustments led to a 9-to-1 second half shot advantage in favor of the black and red.
Catholic created seven corner kick opportunities for the game.
Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) recorded four saves in her third shutout win of the year.
The Cardinals return to action for another home game, as the welcome Stevenson University on Thursday, Sept. 19 for a 4:30p.m. kickoff.
