WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women’s soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory over Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in non-conference action in Camden, N.J.
Catholic improves to 7-6 on the season with back-to-back victories, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-8-1 on the season.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half, as Catholic held an 8-to-2 advantage in shots.
The game was deadlocked until a Catholic attack sent a cross into the Rutgers-Camden box. A Scarlet Raptor tried to clear the ball but deflected into the back of the net at 61:15 into the game. Just 17 seconds later, Kate Masson (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) corralled a ball and ripped a shot from the top of the goal box into the left post, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead with 61:32 on the clock.
To add to the burst of activity, Rutgers-Camden responded with their own goal less than one minute after Masson’s tally. Rebecca Gougher scored for the Scarlet Raptors to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 62:25 mark.
Freshman Sarah Madden (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) scored in the 72nd minute to go up 3-1 and put the game out of reach for Rutgers-Camden. Alyssa Fiore (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) sent a corner kick into the box as Kelly Henderson (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) headed the ball on frame as Madden was there to clean it up for her first collegiate goal.
Goalkeeper Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) recorded four saves for the Cardinals, while her counterpart had eight for Rutgers-Camden.
The Cardinals return to action this Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12:00 p.m. when they head to Susquehanna (1-9-2)University for a Landmark Conference match.
