Rookies Lift Cardinals Over Quakers in Home Opener

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women’s soccer team captured a home opening victory with a 3-0 shutout over Guilford College at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday night.

The Catholic offense featured three career first goals as freshmen Meghan Corso, Krista Boretti and Michelle Diaz-Silveira each took a turn placing the ball in the net.

Corso struck first in the 44th minute with a clean header inside the left post. She received a high cross from the low right corner from sophomore Elizabeth Johnson and leaped through the air to flick it into the net.

After the halftime intermission, Boretti took her opportunity at a goal at the 63:54 mark. Fellow freshman Maggie Moorcones fed Boretti a short ball from 25 yards out. Boretti took two touches down the middle and ripped a shot to the back-left corner.

With just over a minute remaining the in game, Diaz-Silveira got hungry for a goal of her own. Waiting outside the top of the box, sophomore Sarah Brush chipped the ball back to Diaz-Silveira, who used her left foot to send the ball flying over the keepers head and under the crossbar.

Senior Ally Marcello recorded her first start and win of the 2017 season. She split time in the net and shares the Cardinals' second shutout of the year with junior Christina Peyroux.

The Cardinals continue their year with a match against Randolph-Macon College at 5:30 p.m., on Sunday, September 10 at Cardinal Stadium.
