Cardinals Shut Out Yellow Jackets, 2-0

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's soccer team recorded it third shutout of the year with a 2-0 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Sunday evening.

Sophomore Elizabeth Johnson recorded Catholic's first score of the night in the 29th on a perfectly placed header in the top left corner of the net.

Johnson's goal was set up after a corner kick from senior Andrea Jablonskyj which resulted in a blocked shot from sophomore Reagan Sharkey. Sharkey's shot ricocheted to the foot of senior Alexa Povelaitis who controlled the ball and chipped it to the head of Johnson to record her first assist of the year.

After the halftime break, junior Jillian Sudo enjoyed the opportunity to advance the Cardinal score in the 78th minute. With Catholic controlling possession, in the 18-yard box, the ball popped high in air, landing at the foot a Yellow Jacket defender. Sudo snatched the ball from her feet and quickly turned to place a shot on the ground into the back-left corner.

The Cardinals outshot the Yellow Jackets 22-10 throughout the match with Sudo and classmate Taylor Pisk taking four shots a piece.

Junior Mackenzie Earley along with the entire defensive line forced Randolph-Macon to just four shots on goal and allowed just one corner kick opportunity. Catholic keeper, junior Christina Peyroux put a stop to all four shots on target to earn her second with in 2017.

With the win the Cardinals advance their record to 3-1 while capturing the crown of the 2017 D.C. Classic. Following the game, Earley, Johnson, Peyroux and Povelaitis were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Catholic will remain at home, hosting the Stevenson Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13.
