WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's soccer team dropped its non-conference match, 2-1, to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks got a quick break in the sixth minute when a shot ricocheted off the post that left the net open for a follow-up shot to gain a 1-0 advantage.
Catholic earned the opportunity to equalize in 42nd minute when the St. Mary's defense committed a handball in the box. Senior Alexa Povelaitis stepped to the penalty line in and drove the ball on the ground past the keeper into the back right post for a 1-1 tie.
Following the break, the Seahawks completed another fast score with a shot from 25 yards out, dipping under the far left crossbar in the 47th minute for the gamewinner.
The Cardinals maintained possession during the midweek contest earning a 15-9 shooting advantage throughout the 90 minutes game. Sophomore Elizabeth Johnson led the team with four shots and Povelaitis tallied two. Catholic was awarded nine corner kicks. Sophomore Sarah Brush inbounded three while senior Andrea Jablonskyj, sophomore Gabby Demarest and freshman Madison Shelly each took two.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, September 30, when the travel to Juniata College for a Landmark Conference matchup against the Eagles at 1 p.m.
