Johnson's Hat Trick Helps Cardinals Fly Over Gophers, 8-2

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women’s soccer team captured their second Landmark Conference win of the year with an outstanding 8-2 victory over Goucher College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals’ victory was a full team effort. They registered an assist on each goal with six different goal scorers along with six players that recorded assists. Catholic sophomore Elizabeth Johnson completed her first career hat trick while her classmate Daniella Montesano recorded three assists.

The Cardinals got right down to business in the midweek conference matchup. During the 11th minute, the Catholic defense won the ball and switched fields to junior Jillian Sudo on the right wing. Sudo dribbled down the side and sent a pass flawlessly into the middle of the box to Johnson who touched it into the goal for her first score of the event.

Just four minutes later Montesano lofted the ball from 40-yards out to the foot of Johnson. Johnson controlled the pass at the top corner of the box and ripped it into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Montesano recorded Catholic’s next assist when slotted a through ball to Meghan Corso who one-touched it between the posts and put the Cards up 3-0.

With under three minutes remaining in the first half, Corso served a corner kick into the six-yard box. Senior Riley Hawblitzel saw her opportunity to increase the Catholic lead and pushed the ball into the net to go ahead 4-0 before the break.

Following the intermission, the Cardinals increased their lead to 5-0 in the 71st minute. From the right side of the box, sophomore Gabby Demarest chipped a cross to Sudo, who trapped the ball in fired it inside the left post. Johnson completed her hattrick just seconds later in the 71st minute when she secured a pass from Montesano, spun around a Goucher defender and sent the ball into the back-left corner for a 6-0 advantage.

Goucher got on the board when they took advantage of a corner kick in the 78th minute but it didn't put out the fire of the Catholic offense. Following the kickoff in the same minute, freshman Bridget Buckley carried the ball high into the box and lofted a cross to classmate Maggie Moorcones who stuffed it inside the left post (7-1).

With just minutes remaining, sophomore Bella Bertoncini took the ball down the left side and sent a short pass to Buckley at the top of the box. Buckley booted the ball into the back right post to record Catholic’s eighth and final goal of the event in the 86th minute.

The Cardinals held the Gophers shotless in the first half with a 16-0 shooting advantage while they completed the game outshooting Goucher 30-4.

Catholic senior Ally Marcello earned her fourth win of the season while freshman Nina Fernandez recorded her first career appearance in goal.
