2000 Season Preview

After posting their best record since 1991, the Cardinals look to the 2000 season with a great deal of enthusiasm and confidence. Coach Scott Racek is hopeful of a climb in the conference standings.

The Cards return nine starters and four additional letterwinners. The group is led by sophomore midfielder Colleen Redlinger, who was named team Rookie of the Year in 1999 after scoring 16 points on six goals and four assists, and sophomore midfielder Julie Cosden (seven points on two goals and three assists).

"Although the team lost several significant seniors," Racek said, "we return the heart of our team in Colleen and Julie."

Senior midfielder Heather Winters' 17 points (four goals and nine assists) led the club in scoring. Junior forward Nicole Pino was the team's third-leading scorer, checking in with 13 points on five goals and three assists.

Two-time team MVP Mendie Hoffman and four-year starter Deborah Dubensky - defensive stalwarts who helped the CUA post three shutouts on the road last season - will be sorely missed. But junior Dana Tarricone and senior Lauren Ottaviano are expected to bring the type of defensive leadership the team will need to be successful.

Sophomores Rachel Glennon and Molly Moran will contend to be the club's starting goaltender. Glennon played in 11 matches last season and posted a 1.75 goals-against average. Moran appeared in four contests without allowing a goal.

The 2000 schedule brings some new competition mixed with traditional rivals. CAC rivalries with St. Mary's (Md.), Salisbury State and Mary Washington have brought out the best in both teams. Non-conference opponents include Villa Julie, Washington College and Cabrini.
