|Season Preview||August 2002|
The Cardinals look to the 2002 season with renewed hope. After a series of rebuilding seasons, the women's team believes it is poised to have a breakthrough campaign this fall.
While the team loses a significant senior in Dana Tarricone, they return the heart of their team in Rookie of the Year and second team all conference Jenny Aspinwall and midfield presence Lia DeGisi and Brianne Palmieri. The team returns 11 starters and welcomes 10 newcomers to its roster. Among the returning players is captain Colleen Redlinger and talented forward Aubrey Maki, both starters and all-league caliber players.
While the team must revamp some in each of the field positions, the coaches are confident that the younger players will be able to step up and play at the high level needed for success. These incoming players include local standout Laura Kaye and Pennsylvania star Deanna Keil. Senior players, including Jackie Yacenda, bring the type of skill leadership the team needs this fall, and are poised to lead the women to a winning season.
In goal, the team has a great deal of experience and depth. Co-starters Meghan Baroody and Rachel Glennon will be joined by several freshmen to push them for their positions.
The 2002 schedule brings some new competition mixed in with some traditional rivals. Conference rivalries with St. Mary's, Salisbury and Mary Washington have brought out the best in both teams. Out-of-conference rivals include Washington College and new teams include Averett and Shenandoah.
