WASHINGTON --- Goucher College advanced to the semifinals of the 2003 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament defeating Catholic, 4-3, in penalty kicks. The teams were tied at 1-1 through regulation and through two overtime periods.
After a scoreless first half, senior Brianne Palmieri (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made it 1-0 as she poked a shot past Gopher goalie Tara Haag in the 48th minute.
But Goucher answered in the 70th minute as Marisa Long beat CUA keeper Meghan Baroody (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) with a high shot from 25 yards out.
The teams battled the rest of regulation and through two extra sessions before deciding the game on penalty kicks.
The best-of-five shootout was tied 3-3 going into the final round of shooting. Goucher' Lindsey Henley found the back of the net, setting the stage for Catholic to tie on its last shootout opportunity but Lia DeGisi's (Medford, N.J./Merion Mercy) shot hit the crossbar, sending the Gophers to the semifinal round.
Catholic finishes the season 14-4-1 while Goucher stands at 8-7-3.
