#18 Generals Shutout Cards
Three W&L first-half goals beat CUA
LEXINGTON, Va. - Three first-half goals were too much to overcome for the CUA women's soccer team (9-4) against the #18 Washington & Lee Generals (9-0-2) Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Cardinals who came into the game looking to give the nationally-ranked Generals their first loss of the fall.
Washington and Lee scored its first goal at 8:38 when Roz Klann controlled a pass from Anne Van Devender long enough to shoot the ball past keeper Kim Stengle (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) making the score 1-0. In the 30th minute, the Generals struck again. Martha Caulkins found the back of the net to go up by two, Van Devender notched her second assist of the afternoon on the play. Finally, W&L capped off the half with an unassisted goal by Anne Wiltshire making it 3-0.
The defense pulled it together in the second half but the offense couldn't make up the deficit. The Cardinals were slow on the offensive end the entire game taking just two shots in both halves and just one on goal for the game. Despite holding the Generals to no goals in the second, the score was still 3-0 at the final whistle.
The Generals outshot the Cards 18-4 for the game and had seven corner kicks while CUS attempted none. Stengle notched eight saves for the game.
CUA will take a week off before traveling to Montclair State next Sunday for a 2:00 p.m., kickoff.
