Cards Win CAC First Round Game Versus
CUA will face the winner of Salisbury/Marymount on Tuesday at home
WASHINGTON - The first half of the women's soccer game against Goucher looked like a typical CUA contest this season. The Cardinals took shot after shot but couldn't score resulting in a 0-0 halftime tie. The second half, however, CUA came alive and knocked in two goals to win 2-0 and now advance to the CAC semifinals on Tuesday.
After the first half drought, CUA looked like a different team in the second. At 48:09, the Cards were awarded one of their seven corner kicks in the second half. Elyse Bellardini (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) took the corner and dropped it perfectly into the box. Freshman Helene Nicoletti (Haddonsfield, N.J./Haddonsfield rushed the goal and was able to get a foot onto it to go up 1-0. The score marked Nicoletti's first collegiate goal of her career.
At 84:07 Bellardini secured the win with her second goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder got the ball at the top of the box and weaved through the entire left side of defenders to smash the ball into the right corner making it 2-0 which would be the final.
As has been the case all season, CUA dominated the offense outshooting the Gophers 32-2 and taking 10 corners while Goucher was awarded none. Kim Stengle (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) had two saves for the Cards and keeper Stephanie Ricketts stopped 14 shots in goal for the Gophers.
With the win the #2 seed Cardinals will move to the CAC semifinals on Tuesday against the winner of # 3 Salisbury vs. #6 Marymount. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
