Cards Drop Game to #8 Red Dragons
ONEONTA, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2006) - An hour delay mid-game couldn't jump start a slow offense for Catholic University women's soccer (1-2) at the Oneonta Mayor's Cup Saturday afternoon. The #8 SUNY-Oneonta's Red Dragons (2-1) were too much for the Cardinals who were outshot 18-4.
"Despite the scoreline, our girls never gave up. They continued to battle for 90 minutes," said head coach J.P. Sousa. "We are very proud of them."
The Red Dragons scored early in the game off of a rebound from Cardinal keeper Kim Stengle (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge). The late in the first stanza Oneonta struck again off of a cross.
With a delay due to thunderstorms mid-game, the Cardinals had a chance to recover from the 2-0 deficit but they would have no such luck as Oneonta continued the shooting barrage.
Early in the second half Mary Velan piled on another goal with a shot lifted right above Stengle's reach. Two minutes later, a corner kick goal sealed CUA's fate making the final 4-0.
Stengle had nine saves while the Red Dragons had none. CUA was outshot 18-4 and had just one corner kick to Oneonta's seven.
The Cards will take on Hartwick on Sunday in the second game of the Mayor's Cup beginning at 12:00 p.m.
