Cards and Rangers Tie in Landmark Tilt
Marks the third draw of the season for the Cards
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's soccer squad (8-1-3, 1-0-2 Landmark) added another tie to their record Saturday afternoon going scoreless in a double overtime draw against the Drew University Rangers (4-7-3, 1-2-1 Landmark). The scenario is familiar to both teams who now have a combined six ties for the season.
During regulation, it was all CUA as the Cards controlled the offense and pace of the game. In the first 90 minutes, CUA outshot Drew 14-4. Unfortunately for the Cardinals despite the abundance of opportunities, the ball was not going where players intended with a number of high and wide attempts. The game got physical as it neared the conclusion of regulation with offsetting yellow cards being called in the 73rd minute which set the tone for overtime.
Neither team managed a shot during the first ten minutes of OT as the ball stayed primarily in the middle of the field with both defenses staying strong. Midway through there were once again yellow cards given out as the teams began to fight for possession. In the second overtime both team managed on solid shot but neither could connect and after 110 minutes of play the game was declared a draw.
CUA held the offensive advantage outshooting Drew 15-5. Corner kicks were at a premium for both squads with each earning one both coming in the first half. Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) had one save in goal for CUA and Ann Mularz tallied six in the net for Drew.
The Cards will travel to nearby Goucher College on Tuesday for another conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
