Cards Dig Gophers Into a 5-0 Hole
Bellardini notches a pair of goals
TOWSON, Md.- The Catholic University women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a big 5-0 victory over the Goucher College Gophers (3-10, 0-4 Landmark) Tuesday evening in Maryland. After tying in their last game, the Cards defeated the Gophers to improve to 9-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the Landmark Conference.
Alix McDonald (Vero Beach, Fla./Saint Edward's) hit the first goal 20 minutes in off of an assist from Kelly Anderson (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More) to make the score 1-0. Elyse Bellardini (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored her first goal of the game at 33:30 off of an unassisted shot to make it 2-0 going into the break.
In the second half, Jenna Graham (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) struck for the Cardinals in the 54th minute with an unassisted tally to pad the lead. As the Cards continued to put on a shooting clinic, Sara Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) notched a score for the game with a shot off of a pass from McDonald at 69:44. Finally, Belladini hit her second unassisted goal of the game to make the final 5-0 as the final whistle blew.
The Cardinals controlled the offense with an astounding 48 shots for the game allowing just one by the Gophers. CUA also took six corner kicks while Goucher was awarded none. Neither CUA keeper tallied a save for the game but Gopher keeper Kellen Matthews notched 21 saves for the game.
The Cardinals will host senior day on Sunday at the Upper Fields. They will play in the first of a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
