Cards defeat top-seeded Grove City 1-0

GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Catholic University women's soccer team (12-3-4) upset the top-seeded Grove City College Wolverines (16-4-1) in the East Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The fifth-seeded Cardinals beat Widener on Wednesday and then took Grove City in a 1-0 decision on Saturday to advance to Sunday's championship contest.

The game was scoreless as both teams put on shooting clinics but couldn't find the back of the net throughout the first and much of the second half. With it looking as though it would go into overtime, the Cardinals took a late corner kick in the 77th minute. Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) booted it from the corner and bent the ball enough to angle it into the net putting the Cards up by one. Grove City had some late chances but the equalizer was not in the cards as CUA went on to win 1-0 upsetting the top-seeded Wolverines.

The Cardinals outshot Grove City 19-12 and took one more corner kick attempting six in the contest. Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) got the win for CUA with six saves on the day. Rossi was battling back from an injury suffered during Wednesday's first round game. Diana Pragel took the loss for Grove City despite sevens saves.

The Cardinals advance to the championship game on Sunday versus the winner of Swarthmore/Frostburg State who play at 2 p.m. Sunday's championship game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
