Cards Fall to Swarthmore 1-0
CUA will face Villa Julie on Day Two of SWAT Kick Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Catholic University women's soccer team was blanked in their first game of 2007 at the SWAT Kick Classic Saturday afternoon. The Cards fell to the host Garnet 1-0 on the first day of the tournament.
The first half was quiet for both squads as neither could find the back of the net. In the opening stanza Swarthmore led in shots 6-2 as well as corner kicks 3-1. Sophomore Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) moved into the starting position in goal which had been occupied by 2007 graduate Kim Stengle for the past three seasons. Despite seeing limited minutes her rookie year, Rossi stepped in a played the full game for the Cards. In the first half she notched two saves.
Early in the second Swarthmore got on the board when Megan Colombo chipped the ball over Rossi to the right corner and the waiting foot of Kelsey Cline to make it 1-0. The Cardinal defense held on for the remainder of the game but the offense was unable to even it up making the final 1-0 after 90 minutes.
Rossi took the loss for the Cards despite four saves on the afternoon while Lauren walker had the win for the Garnet. CUA was outshot 13-5 and had just one corner kick to Swarthmore's five.
The Cardinals face Villa Julie on the second day of the SWAT Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m.
