CUA Tramples Cavaliers 6-3
Napolitano breaks assist record
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's soccer team (4-1) beat the Cabrini College Cavaliers 6-3 on Saturday at the CUA Upper Fields. Senior Diana Napolitano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart) had an assist in the game which broke the record for career assists set by Laura Kaye in 2005. The win was also significant for the Cards who returned to the upper fields after a year hiatus. Currently CUA has not lost on that turf since 2004.
Freshman Landmark Conference Player of the Week Kelly Donnelly (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) posted her first intercollegiate hat trick in the match. Donnelly started the scoring at in the tenth minute off of a scramble near the goal. However, Cabrini came back with a goal after keeper Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) went down for a ball out near the top of the box and Sabina DeGisi got by her to even it up.
Donnelly hit her second just minutes later but once again DeGisi matched it. Finally Napolitano found Kelly Anderson (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More) on the right side who hit a high shot into the goal to make it 3-2 going into the break and giving Napolitano her record.
In the second half, Napolitano scored a goal of her own off of a cross from Donnelly and despite DeGisi's third goal it would be enough. Both Donnelly and Ashley Dodd (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame) found the back of the net for the Cards later in the half making the final 6-3.
CUA dominated on offense outshooting the Cavaliers 27-5. Rossi got the win while Gianna Poretta was credited with the loss for Cabrini as well as 14 saves. Napolitano now holds the record for assists in a game, season and career.
CUA be back in action on Tuesday at Marymount. The game will be played at Quincy Field and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
