CUA Downs Mustangs 2-0
Four Cards named all-toournament
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sunday afternoon was a shooting clinic for the Catholic University women's soccer team (1-1) as they shut out the Villa Julie Mustangs (1-1) 2-0 at the SWAT Kick Classic. The game was the second of the tournament hosted by Swarthmore College. The Cards outshot the Mustangs 29-3 in the victory, which was their first of 2007. For the tournament four Cardinals were named to the all-tourney squad. Elyse Bellardini (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), Katelynn Chambers (Montclair, N.J./Montclair), Suzie Peters (Nanuet, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Diana Napolitano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart) were all selected for their efforts.
Bellardini got CUA on the board early in the game as she scored less than 15 minutes in. Bellardini's unassisted shot went over keeper Casey Brown's head and into the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Cards got a number of good looks throughout the rest of the half but couldn't connect partly due to the goalkeeping of Brown who notched ten saves in the first 45 minutes. CUA went into the locker room up 1-0 with a 15-3 advantage on shots.
In the second half, the Cards kept firing controlling the ball almost the entire game not allowing any more Mustang opportunities. In the 83rd minute Peters gave CUA some breathing room with an unassisted goal off of a rebound from a previous shot. This made the score 2-0 which would be the final.
Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cards and tallied one save out of VJC's three shots, all which came in the first half. She was credited with the win. CUA ended with a 29-3 shooting advantage but had one less corner kick. Brown finished with 15 saves and the loss.
The Cards improve to 1-1 on the season and will have five days off before hosting the DC Classic next weekend. The first annual DC Classic will feature two games each day and four squads including the Cards. Ferrum will face CUA in the first game of the day at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium with Marymount versus Roanoke to follow at 2:45 p.m.
