Double Overtime Ends in 1-1 Tie
Cards tie Frostburg State to move to 6-1-1
FROSTBURG, Md.- The Catholic University women's soccer team tied the Frostburg State Bobcats (7-2-1) Wednesday evening in a double overtime 1-1 decision. Both teams scored early in the game which then became a defensive battle until it was called a tie after 110 minutes of play. This was the first tie of the season for the Cards who are now 6-1-1.
Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) scored CUA's lone goal of the game less than five minutes in. Spadaro took the pass from Catholic University assist leader Diana Napolitano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart)and found the back of the net to make it 1-0. Less than ten mintutes later Lauren Lentine snuck the ball past keeper Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) to tie it up at one.
The Cardinals controlled the tempo for the remainder of the contest but despite 25 total shots could get nothing past keeper Stephanie Gwinn. The solid defense of both squads forced two ten-minute overtimes before it was called a tie.
CUA had 25 shots to FSU's seven and the Cards also had 10 corner kicks while the Bobcats took just one. Gwinn notched tens saves and Rossi had four as both played the full game.
The Cards will host Juniata on Saturday at 1 p.m., at the DuFour Center Upper Fields. The contest marks the first Landmark Conference game of the season and game one of a soccer doubleheader with the men's team.
