Women's Soccer dominates Goucher
Women's Soccer Clinches Playoffs
October 22, 2008
WASHINGTON--With a 5-1 win over Goucher coupled with a win by Juniata, the Cardinals have clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs.
On a breezy and cold day, CUA took the field looking to simply stay the course and continue their run against Landmark opponents. What happened over the following 90 minutes was far from what was expected.
Less than 13 minutes into the contest, Kelly Donnely (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took a pass from Maggie McCarthy (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and drove the ball into an open net.
Elyse Bellardini (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley), who scored two goals in the game, took a pass from Jenna Graham (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) at the top of the box and drove the ball to the far post beating the visiting keeper, Kellen Matthews.
Goucher scored its only goal of the game on what seemed to be a lazy lofted shot that tucked itself just under the crossbar, making a save attempt nearly impossible for Cardinal keeper Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church).
However, Bellardini seemed to do the exact same thing early in the second half. She took a ball that was cleared out by the Gopher defense beyond the top of the box and lofted the ball high toward the net and beat Matthews just under the crossbar.
Chelsea King (Prospect, Ky./Presentation) and Caitline Brett (Mercerville, N.J./Nottingham) both notched goals in the game. Brett's was in the 50th minute from Carolina Burke (Tuxedo Park, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) while King marked her goal in the 73rd minute on a free kick from just outside the box.
CUA outshot the visiting Gophers 28-4 and dominated every other statistical catigory. 14 different Cardinals recorded at least one shot, with six of them shooting at least twice.
The Cardinals will return to action Saturday, October 25th at Moravian with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m.
