Women's Soccer Falls to Westminster, 1-0
November 12, 2008
NEW WILMINGTON, PA-- The 2008 CUA women's soccer season has come to an end, but not without a battle to the last whistle.
CUA women's soccer fell tonight to Westminster in the opening round of the 2008 ECAC tournament, but the team did not go down without a fight right to the 90th minute. Kelly Donnelly (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) had two chances early in the game when her speed got her behind the defense and into a one-on-one situation with the goalie. Each time she missed just wide of the net, and seemingly foreshadowed what the rest of the evening would be.
The team played well in the first half, controlling the ball and taking 11 shots, but the second half was a different story as the team lost a bit of its composure and played a longer, "run and chase" type of game.
CUA was outshot by one shot, 20-19, but managed six shots on net, the same as the hosts. The deciding goal came in the 66th minute when Lauren Graeser blasted the ball from 10 feet out.
The Cardinals would not lay down and settle to end their season with such disappointment. In the 90th minute with only second left on the clock, Helene Nicoletti (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) took a free kick near the Westminster goal, and hit the crossbar. When the ball landed in the box, there was a scramble and the hosts cleared away the threat.
CUA finished the season 10-8-2, with a double overtime loss in the Landmark Championship game, and a berth into the ECAC tournament.
