CUA Dominates Bridgewater, Earns First Season Win
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women's soccer team faced off against non-conference opponent Bridgewater College Saturday afternoon, and wasted no time in showing their dominance on both ends of the field.
The team was led by junior midfielder Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and freshman midfielder Caitlin Brett (Mercerville, N.J./Nottingham), who each recorded two goals in the contest.
In the first thirty seconds of the game, Spadaro recieved a pass from Jenna Graham (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) and netted a goal from 25 yards out. The team remained relatively quiet on the offensive end for the remainder of the period, but their defensive superiority was evident. The Cardinals limited Bridgewater's scoring opportunities, holding them to just two shot attempts in the entire half.
By the second half, CUA was ready to take a commanding lead. Brett, assisted by Kelly Donnley (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Spadaro, assisted by Chelsea King (Prospect, Ky./Presentation) scored back-to-back goals that gave the Cards a 3-0 advantage. Brett's unassisted goal at the 86 minute mark rounded out CUA's scoring, as the team earned their first win of the season.
The Cardinals dominated Bridgewater in shot attemps, 20-3, and corner kicks, 7-1. Goaltender Tere Rossi also garnered two saves in the contest. Catholic University will finish the Bridgewater Labor Day Tournament on Sunday with a game against Ramapo College (N.J.) at 1:30 p.m.
