Women's Soccer Overpowers Gwynedd-Mercy
September 12, 2009
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women's soccer team continued their undefeated season with a stunning 4-1 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy in round one of the DC Classic Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals soar to a perfect 4-0 record.
CUA found themselves trailing early, as Gwynedd-Mercy's Gwen Conte converted a penalty kick into a 1-0 lead for the Griffins midway through the first half. Four minutes later, senior defender Chelsea King (Prospect, Ky./Presentation) headed the ball to Courtney Orgill (Wall, N.J./Wall) streaking up the middle of the field. Orgill wove between several of GM's defenders and blasted the ball past goalie Kristie Pollock to bring the two teams to a 1-1 standstill.
Determined to break the tie before the end of the period, the Cards rattled off three consecutive shots in the next five minutes of play. With time running out in the first half, freshman Ellen Jansen (Richland, Wash./Southridge) fired the ball from 90 feet out that gave CUA the 2-1 lead at the break.
An own goal at the 60 minute mark gave the home team a 3-1 advantage, and a give-and-go from Helene Nicoletti (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) to Orgill sealed the deal for the Cardinals, as they sailed to a 4-1 victory.
CUA will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, September 12th, against non-conference foe Rutgers-Camden in round two of the DC Classic. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
