Women's Soccer Battles Back Against Moravian
WASHINGTON-- The CUA women's soccer team (15-2-1, 4-1-1 LC) battled back from an early two goal deficit to earn a 3-2 overtime win over Moravian College (8-7, 3-2-1 LC) on Sunday.
It was a full team effort as three Cardinals tallied goals in the contest. Both Diana and Michelle Spadaro earned assists as well.
Leading for Moravian was Shannon McEvoy with two shots, but JeriAnne Weiss and Alessandra Valdetara each found the back of the net for the Greyhounds.
Valdetara scored in the 33rd minute to give the visitors an early lead and Weiss extended that lead just after the break.
Trailing 2-0 in the 59th minute, Helene Nicoletti headed in the first goal of the day for CUA during a scramble in front of the net.
With momentum on their side, the Cardinals outshot the Greyhounds 10-3 in the second half. Ellen Jansen finished a brilliant cross from Diana Spadaro in the 76th minute to equalize the match.
The teams played to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation but with the ball to start the overtime period, CUA wasted no time applying the pressure. Needing only 1:33 in overtime and only one shot, Kelly Donnelly left her feet and bicycled the ball over the keeper on a cross from Michelle Spadaro to earn the win.
With the win CUA now has 15 wins during the regular season, tying the all-time mark set in 2005. The Cardinals also earned the Landmark Conference #1 seed and will host #4 Scranton later in the week. Time and date is to be determined.
