Women's Soccer Ousts Scranton, 4-2
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory over Scranton University in round one of the Landmark Conference Championships at Cardinal Stadium Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 16-2-1, and will play for the Landmark title on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were held scorless for most of the first half, but Catholic finally broke away with two minutes left in the period. Caitlin Conroy found Kelly Donnelly, who chipped the ball past Scranton goalie Caitlin Byrne from 30 yards out. Scranton's response came in the second period, as the Royals recorded back-to-back goals to put them up 2-1 at the 59 minute mark.
CUA answered back just four minutes later. After Conroy connected with Donnelly eight yards from the goal, Donnelly flicked the ball past two defenders to Courtney Orgill. Orgill promptly headed the ball between the posts, tying up the game at 2-2. The goal was the 14th of Orgill's career, tying the CUA record for most goals in a freshman season, set in 2002 by Laura Kaye.
Michelle Spadaro secured the win for the Cardinals at the 67 minute mark, converting off a scramble in front of the net to give the squad the final 3-2 advantage.
The Cards will now await to hear their post-season fate, as they are set to face either Susquehanna or Drew on Saturday afternoon.
