Stellar Defensive Performance Helps Catholic Defeat Alvernia 2-0

READING, Pa-- The Catholic Women’s Soccer team continued their excellent season this afternoon by defeating Alvernia University 2-0. The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 7-0.

Defense was the story of this game, as the score remained knotted at zero until late in the second half. The Cardinals finally found the back of the net when freshman Courtney Orgill took a pass from junior Kelly Donnelly and kicked it just past the Crusader goalie. The goal was Courtney’s eighth of the season.

After the first score, Catholic did not let up and scored again in the 88th minute of action. This time, Kelly Donnely converted off an assist from sophomore Caroline Burke. The goal was Donnelly’s second of the year. In total, Catholic attempted 29 shots on the day and hit the post or crossbar three times.

The Cardinal defense was fantastic, as the Crusaders did not record a shot. Junior goalie Amanda Cowan did a nice job of anchoring the Cardinal defense in leading them to the team's sixth and her first shutout of the season.

The Cardinals will return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when they take on Stevenson University in non-conference action. The home contest will be the last tune-up for Catholic before the first Landmark Conference game against Susquehanna on Saturday, Sept. 26.
