CUA blanks DeSales 1-0 behind Brett's second half goal
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – CUA earned its second shutout of the
season on Friday afternoon as the Cardinals downed DeSales
University by a score of 1-0 at the Griffin Classic. Caitlin
Brett scored the game-winner for CUA in the 79th minute off a feed
from Mary McGann as the Cardinals improve to 2-1 and send the
Bulldogs to their first defeat of the 2010 season (4-1).
CUA doubled DeSales in shots 14-7 and was awarded six corner kicks to DSU’s zero. Christina Cassidy earned the shutout for the Cardinals with five saves in goal, while DeSales’ goalkeeper Melissa Milili was credited with ten saves.
The two teams started off slow in the match on what was a cooler than expected and windy afternoon. CUA unleashed six shots in the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half CUA turned the pressure up, totaling eight shots to DeSales’ four. The Cardinals broke the scoreless tie when Brett took McGann’s pass off a corner kick and beat Milili for the score as CUA went on top 1-0 with exactly 11:30 to play.
From there CUA let its defense do the rest as the Cardinals earned their second win and shutout of the season.
“We had a little bit of a rough start,” Cardinals assistant coach Deanna Keil explained afterwards. “Both teams were even in the first half, but we were able to generate some chances on offense in the second half and eventually capitalized.”
She continued, “We spoke to the girls about making a few adjustments at halftime, such as breaking a team down offensively and defensively, and in the second half I thought we were able to do that. We did a nice job of playing together in that second half.”
CUA gets right back to work on Saturday with a match versus Delaware Valley on the campus of Gwynedd-Mercy. Action gets underway beginning at noon.
Keil looked ahead to CUA’s next contest. “We still need to work on our composure,” she said. “When a team comes at us, we need to respond and play the way we know we’re capable of playing.”
