Cardinals fall to Frostburg State 1-0 in hard-fought match
GERMANTOWN, Md. – The CUA women’s soccer team
suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the
Cardinals fell to Frostburg St. 1-0 at the Maryland
SoccerPlex. The game-winning score came from Heather
Fleishell in the 79th minute as CUA falls to 1-1 following the
match and the Bobcats up their record to 2-0.
CUA outshot Frostburg State 17-9 on the afternoon, while both
teams totaled three corner kicks. Cardinals goalkeeper
Christina Cassidy stopped five shots and Bobcats netminder Michelle
Buckmaster sent back seven shots in her 90 minutes of action.
The Cardinals offense was on the attack in the first half as CUA
took the first four shots of the contest. Neither team was
able to muster a goal in the opening 45 minutes however, which sent
the game into halftime knotted at zero.
CUA began the second half much like the first as the Cardinals
were aggressive and took the first five shots. Frostburg
State was finally able to break the stalemate when Fleishell took a
pass from Liz Seligman at the 78:29 mark and found the back of the
net for a 1-0 Bobcats lead. That goal proved to be the only
scoring of the afternoon in what was a hard-fought match.
CUA now has the next week off before returning to action on
Friday, September 10 when the Cardinals take on DeSales University
at the Griffin Classic. The match, which is scheduled to
begin at 4:00, will take place on the campus of Gwynedd-Mercy.
