CUA upended at Gettysburg 1-0 on rainy night
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Cardinals lost a tough 1-0 decision at
Gettysburg on a rainy evening on Thursday. The game-winning
goal came from Sara Montague in the 87th minute as the Bullets
improve to 4-2. CUA falls to 3-2 as its two-match win streak
comes to a close.
The Cardinals out shot their counterparts 12-9 on the night and
was awarded two corner kicks. Gettysburg registered eight
corner kicks and its goalkeeper, Allie Rivera, sent back one
shot. Amanda Cowan made two saves in goal for CUA.
CUA recorded the first three shots of the match, but the first two
were blocked and the third sailed high. The Cardinals held
the Bullets without a shot for the first 15 minutes of the night
until Casey Attanasio attempted one, but it was blocked.
Both teams made a number of substitutions throughout the half, but
no one was able to find the back of the net, sending the match into
halftime with the score 0-0.
Like it did in the first half CUA controlled play in the beginning
of the second, recording the first two shots and five of the first
six. Still though, the game remained scoreless as the teams
battled one another through the rain.
Kelly Donnelly’s shot at the 80:22 mark went wide for CUA,
while Maggie McCarthy’s was also off the mark three minutes
later.
Gettysburg finally broke the scoreless tie when Montague headed in
a pass from Lauren Johnson for her first goal of the season at the
86:26 mark and the Bullets led 1-0. The proved to be the only
score of the evening as Gettysburg snapped the Cardinals two-match
win streak.
CUA will be back in action on Sunday, September 19 when the
Cardinals conclude their six-match road swing with a trip to
Meredith. Game time is slated for 1:00.
