Cardinals fall to strong Meredith squad on the road in N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The CUA women’s soccer team suffered
its second straight defeat on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals
dropped a 3-0 decision on the road against a strong Meredith
squad. The Avenging Angels scored all three of their goals in
the opening half as they improve to 5-1 and drop CUA back to .500
at 3-3.
CUA had its chances on Sunday as the Cardinals out shot Meredith
15-10 for the match, including an 11-7 advantage in the first
half. The Cardinals were awarded two corner kicks to the
Avenging Angels’ four and the teams were whistled for 21
combined fouls.
In goal for CUA, Christina Cassidy stopped three shots and
Meredith goalkeeper Aslyn Rau sent back four shots in her 90
minutes of work.
Meredith took an early lead in the fifth minute when Alex Mer
Calvert scored at the 4:48 mark off passes from Danielle Lee and
Elizabeth Evans. CUA took its first shot of the day less than
a minute later when Chiara Comolli’s attempt sailed wide.
The Cardinals took eight of the next 11 shots, but Rau stopped
two, two were blocked and the other four went wide, as the score
remained 1-0.
With 30:45 on the first half clock, the Avenging Angels went up
2-0 when Jesse Mer Davis found the back of the net. 12
minutes later, Danielle Mer Lee put CUA in a three-score hole when
she netted a goal off a Jesse Davis assist. That was the
final goal of the opening 45 minutes, sending the teams into
halftime with the Cardinals trailing 3-0.
Meredith took the first three shots of the second half and did not
allow CUA to get an attempt off until over 20 minutes had
elapsed. The Cardinals registered just three more attempts in
the match, two of which were high and one was blocked.
CUA will play one more game before it opens Landmark Conference
action when the Cardinals travel to Stevenson on September 22 for a
4:30 match.
