Cardinals fall to strong Meredith squad on the road in N.C.

RALEIGH, N.C. – The CUA women’s soccer team suffered its second straight defeat on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals dropped a 3-0 decision on the road against a strong Meredith squad.  The Avenging Angels scored all three of their goals in the opening half as they improve to 5-1 and drop CUA back to .500 at 3-3.

CUA had its chances on Sunday as the Cardinals out shot Meredith 15-10 for the match, including an 11-7 advantage in the first half.  The Cardinals were awarded two corner kicks to the Avenging Angels’ four and the teams were whistled for 21 combined fouls.

In goal for CUA, Christina Cassidy stopped three shots and Meredith goalkeeper Aslyn Rau sent back four shots in her 90 minutes of work.

Meredith took an early lead in the fifth minute when Alex Mer Calvert scored at the 4:48 mark off passes from Danielle Lee and Elizabeth Evans.  CUA took its first shot of the day less than a minute later when Chiara Comolli’s attempt sailed wide.

The Cardinals took eight of the next 11 shots, but Rau stopped two, two were blocked and the other four went wide, as the score remained 1-0.

Meredith took the first three shots of the second half and did not allow CUA to get an attempt off until over 20 minutes had elapsed.  The Cardinals registered just three more attempts in the match, two of which were high and one was blocked.

CUA will play one more game before it opens Landmark Conference action when the Cardinals travel to Stevenson on September 22 for a 4:30 match.
