Cardinals get 2010 season off to strong start with 5-1 win
WASHINGTON – The CUA women’s soccer team got its
2010 season off to a strong start on Wednesday afternoon as the
Cardinals downed Marymount 5-1 at home. Regina Zolbrod scored
twice for CUA, while Ellen Jansen handed out a pair of assists.
“I’m happy to win the first game and to see some good performances out of our players,” CUA head coach J.P. Sousa explained afterwards. “It was great to see Regina score the first two goals of her career. I thought Caroline Burke played well and that Katie Donatelli and Erin Saia did a great job of holding down the defense.”
CUA held the edge in every statistical category, outshooting its opponent 26-4, totaling eight corner kicks to Marymount’s zero and recording 13 shots on goal to the visitor’s two.
Zolbrod started the game and season off right with her first collegiate score only five minutes into the match. The shot came off a rebound right in front of the goal. The sophomore then made it a 2-0 contest when she found the back of the net off a feed from Jansen just one minute later.
Lauren Cadott added to CUA’s lead when she took Jansen’s pass off a corner and headed the ball into the back of the net at the 15:25 mark.
Courtney Orgill then made it a four-goal half for the Cardinals when she scored with only 56 seconds on the clock off Noelle Arcomano’s helper. That sent CUA into halftime with a very comfortable 4-0 advantage.
Caitlin Brett got into the scoring act with an unassisted goal at the 75:16 mark in the second half to put the home team on top 5-0. Marymount was finally able to break through the tough Cardinals defense when Paige Pierson scored with less than nine minutes to play to make the final tally 5-1 in favor of CUA.
CUA will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 4th when the Cardinals take on Frostburg State at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
