WASHINGTON- The Catholic University women's soccer team defeated the FDU-Florham Devils in round one of the DC Classic Friday night in overtime with a final score of 1-0. Katie Masson scored the game-winner for CUA with an assist from Kaylre Greaves.
The Cardinals held a 16-10 advantage in shots over the Devils and was awarded five corner kicks to FDU's one.
Christina Cassidy earned the win in goal for CUA as she stopped seven shots, while FDU's Lauren Albrecht sent back nine.
CUA unleashed 10 shots to FDU's four in the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The second half started off strong with the Devils firing two shots four minutes into the half but both shots were saved by Cassidy. CUA's first shot of the half was attempted by Ellen Jansen at the 50:50 mark but it was stopped by Albrecht.
The remainder of the half was fairly quiet with CUA attempting just three shots and FDU credited with only two. That sent the game into overtime still tied at zero.
In overtime, CUA did not hesitate as Jansen was awarded a corner kick one minute in and sent the ball toward Caitlin Brett who attempted to score but was unsuccessful. FDU would have back-to-back opportunities to score, but both shots were wide. Finally, CUA's Masson scored the winning goal off a perfect pass from Greaves to make the final score 1-0.
The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday, September 11, 2011, in their second game of the DC Classic against Meredith beginning at 2p.m
