Cardinals suffer first conference loss, fall to Scranton 1-0
SCRANTON, Pa. – CUA suffered its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Scranton on the road. The Royals received the game-winning goal from Sarah Gibbons in the 69th minute to improve to 5-0 in the Landmark, while dropping the Cardinals to 4-1 in league action.
The first half was rather quiet offensively, with the two teams combining for only six shots.
The Cardinals first attempt came from Courtney Orgill in the 11th minute, but Royals keeper Kelsy McAnelly made the stop.
Samantha Russo looked to give Scranton an early lead with a shot in the 12th minute, but Christina Cassidy sent the shot back for CUA.
Russo tried her luck again in the 29th minute, but this attempt was high.
The final shot of the half came from Scranton's Megan Gillmartin at the 32:28 mark, but it sailed wide, sending the teams into halftime with no score.
Early in the second CUA had a scoring chance when the Cardinals were awarded a corner kick. Orgill sent the ball in and eventually got off a shot, but it went wide, keeping the game scoreless.
Later, CUA's Caitlin Conroy looked for the first score of the day at the 61:41 mark, but her shot sailed wide.
At the 68:12 mark Scranton was able to get on the board when Gibbons took a feed from Sydney Parker and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Royals lead. The goal came off of a corner kick.
Scranton finished with a 13-3 advantage in shots, but only three of the Royals shots were on goal. Cassidy stopped five shots on the day in goal, while McAnelly sent back one shot for the home team.
The Cardinals will return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Hood to town. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
